Fred’s discount chain is closing 159 stores, including 19 in Alabama.
The closures are taking place at “underperforming” and “unprofitable” stores, the Memphis-based company said. The company has also retained PJ Soloman to review alternatives for the company’s current operating plan, officials said.
“After a careful review, we have made the decision to rationalize our footprint by closing underperforming stores, with a particular focus on locations with shorter duration leases. Most of these stores have near-term lease expirations and limited remaining lease obligations,” said Joseph Anto, Fred’s Chief Executive Officer. “Decisions that impact our associates in this way are difficult, but the steps we are announcing are necessary. We will make every effort to transition impacted associates to other stores where possible.”
Liquidations sales at the closing locations will begin today, with operations stopping by the end of May. Fred’s will continue to operate 398 other locations in 11 states.
